Guide To Stoke-on-Trent |
|
Stoke-on-Trent, which is often refered to as The Potteries, is a city located in the English county of Staffordshire in the Midlands. The city is almost equidistant to Manchester, Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, Liverpool and Sheffield.
In contrast to most other English cities, Stoke-on-Trent's authoritive council is led by an elected mayor; the first bing Mike Wolfe and then, since May 2005, Mark Meredith. The city is actually the only one of the 11 English districts with elected mayors to use the mayor and council manager system rather than the mayor and cabinet system.
The city of Stoke-on-Trent, which was granted its city status in 1925, is made up of six towns - Hanley, Burslem, Longton, Stoke, Tunstall and Fenton. Despite being named after the town of Stoke, it is the town Hanley that is regarded as Stoke-on-Trent city centre.
Since the 17th century the city has been known for its pottery manufacturing, hence its nickname The Potteries, and thousands of tourist still flock to the area today to visit museums and shops dedicated to world famous names such as Royal Doulton, Wedgwood and Minton, which were all born and based here.
The city is home to two famous football teams, Stoke City FC and Port Vale FC, and is also well known for its connections to legendary footballer Sir Stanley Matthews.
Along with Matthews, Stoke-on-Trent has many other famous sons, including popstar Robbie Williams, presenters Jonathan Wilkes and Anthea Turner, and rock guitarist Slash. Stoke-on-Trent is home to a number of tourist attractions, such as the Etruria Industrial Museum, the Elizabethan Ford Green Hall, the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Trentham Gardens and Ceramica. In addition to all this the famous Alton Towers theme park is close by while the Peak District is only 10 miles away.
