 | Stansted Mountfitchet is an Essex village which stands on the Hertfordshire border. It is just two miles from Stansted Airport and 30 miles north of London.
Through the years the village has been an Iron Age fort and a Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement. Its name: Stansted, translates to 'stony place' in Saxon. The village's suffix of Mountfitchet was acquired during the Norman invasion. A Norman baron of this name settled here and built a castle, of which there are remains in the village today. Mountfitchet Castle is a protected national historic monument, dating from 1066. It is open to the public daily from March to November. You can also see 1066 village, which takes a look at 11th Century life.
Well worth visiting is the House on the Hill Toy Museum. This is the largest museum of its kind in Europe and features more than 80,000 exhibits. One of the exhibits on show is Princess Diana's Tracker bike. There's also a working windmill in the village which was built in 1787. This opens to the public once a month. |
