 | Built on the River Don, the town of Rotherham can be found in South Yorkshire in the Don Valley between Sheffield and Doncaster.
The town was founded in the early Middle Ages and quickly established itself as an important Saxon market town, particularly as it lies on a Roman road that runs through part of the Don Valley.
By the turn of the 16th century the town was had an enviable reputation, mainly thanks to the stylish All Saints Parish Church and the The College of Jesus, which was built to rival colleges in Oxford and Cambridge. However, under the reign of Edward VI, the college was dissolved and stripped of its assets and by the end of the century Rotherham had become an infamous haven for gambling.
These days, Rotherham is a vibrant entertainment destination for visitors thanks to its links to entertainmers suh as Dougie Brown, Paul Shane and the Chuckle Brothers.
It is also a popular haunt with both clubbers and culture vultures, with attractions including Liquid Nightclub and the Civic Theatre and Arts Centre. |
