However, as its designs have changed over the decades so has the firm’s approach to marketing. Instead of using traditional methods of advertising, the budget is now almost exclusively devoted to online local search. The switch came a year ago when the practice’s principal, Keith Loveless, and his team were persuaded that the internet would provide them with a much more cost effective way of marketing the company and generating enquiries. Today rlm Architects has a major presence on leading search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and www.city-visitor.com and, as a result of its Priority Listings and Sponsored Links, is one of the first to be seen when potential clients type in ‘architects in Bournemouth’. It is certainly working as it is generating an increasing number of leads, which have led to significant projects. According to Keith there are a number of benefits he has identified since he made the move to the Internet. “The obvious one is that it is highly relevant. After all people would not be looking for an architect in our area online unless they wanted to use one. Newspaper advertising on the other hand can be a lottery because someone has to be looking for an architect that day in order for it to be relevant. If they want one a week or so later they may not remember your advertisement. “People searching online can also find out so much more about your company, as they can click straight through to your website. Once at your site it will inform them of everything they need to now about your experience and specialisms, as well as your contact details.” Keith does confess to continuing to advertise in Yellow Pages but he realises this may not be for much longer. “Having been in the directory for so many years there is a certain fear about no longer being in it,” he said. “Logically I know less and less people still refer to directories as it is the older generation like myself who grab them off the shelf. My son, on the other hand, would always look for something online. What’s more, with the advent of mobile search such as the iPhone we will soon all be able to search for local businesses on the move, so we won’t have access to a directory when we are out and about.”RLM Architects |
