 | Located on the doorstep of Manchester and bridging the gap between this North West city and the rolling hills of the Pennines is the town of Oldham.
Oldham's location means that if you're in the Victorian town centre you're never far away from the countryside. Postcodes for Oldham begin with the letters OL and as well as Oldham itself the OL postcode includes Todmorden, Heywood, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Bacup, Rochdale, and Littleborough, towns that also enjoy the surrounding countryside.
However residents in the Oldham area don't need to venture out of the town to enjoy open spaces and the lush green of fresh grass as the Oldham area boasts a number of parks, the most famous of which is Alexandra Park in the heart of the town centre.
Alexandra Park has been a landmark in the town since Victorian times and many of the park's features, for example The Pagoda and the statue of Joseph Howarth date from this time.
In 1975, Alexandra Park and the surrounding area was made a conservation area. However, the park has been a town landmark since Victorian times. However the park and the surrounding area only became a conservation area in 1975 and more recently the three-and-a-half mile Alexandra Park Circular Walk was introduced so that people can enjoy a guided walk round some of the town's landmarks.
Despite being so close to Manchester the mill town of Oldham has managed to forge its own identity partly due to its achievements during the Industrial Revolution and more recently because of notable events that have links with the town. By the end of the 19th century, this mill town was known as the world's greatest cotton spinning town, the world's first test tube baby was born in Oldham royal Hospital and Take That member Mark Owen, presenter Phillip Schofield and comedy double act Cannon and Ball were all born in the town.
