 | Lincoln - the administrative centre of Lincolnshire and a beautiful cathedral city situated on the River Witham between Nottingham and the east coast resort of Skegness.
During Roman times Lincoln was known as Lindum, and although the Romans built a fort there they soon abandoned it because the area was so quiet. The area soon grew into a thriving town and by the time of the Domesday Book it was about a third of the size of London.
In the Middle Ages Lincoln was a major town in England and the centre of the wool trade, and it's at this time that Lincoln's cathedral was built. However an earthquake in 1185 destroyed the first cathedral and it was rebuilt in magnificent style incorporating the remains of the Romanesque cathedral. Even today the cathedral towers above the city and is thought to be one of the finest medieval buildings in Europe.
However while Lincoln Cathedral may be the most prominent feature of this city, beneath its gaze city life continues amidst the cobbled streets and modern art that lines the city routes.
If you are planning a trip to Lincoln, or live there and are looking for something to do, why not visit some of Lincoln's main attractions, for example the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, Lincoln Castle, or 'Lincoln - The Collection' at Lincoln Usher Art Gallery, the place for fine and decorative arts in the city.
Alternatively you can head to one of Lincoln's three main theatres, the Lincoln Theatre Royal, Bishop Greaves Theatre and the Terry O'Toole Theatre to watch a range of drama productions, enjoy some live music or some comedy at Lincoln's Drill Hall or even head to the cinema for some Hollywood thrills where you may see the city feature. Lincolnshire has appeared in a number of films including Pride & Prejudice (1995) and The Haunting (1999) and will also feature in the Da Vinci Code with Lincoln Cathedral appearing as a double of Westminster Abbey.
