 | The North East coastal town of Hartlepool serves as a North sea port and sits within the borough of Hartlepool in the traditional county of Durham.
Originally formed around a convent overlooking a natural harbour, the village of Hartlepool was founded in the Seventh Century AD.
The small village has now developed into a thriving town which incorporates old and new.
The modern side of town, West Hartlepool, was founded in 1847 and was formed around its docks and train station, which enabled South Durham coal to be exported.
Hartlepool and West Hartlepool officially united in 1967. Hartlepool is famous for the alleged execution of a monkey in Napoleonic Wartime. Legend has it that the monkey was hanged after it was suspected that it was a spy.
Today, the mascot of Hartlepool's football team, Hartlepool United F.C, is a monkey aptly named H'Angus The Monkey.
Hartlepool's nearest rivals are nearby Darlington Football Club. Hartlepool is packed with award winning sights, including the Hartlepool Historic Quay and the HMS Trincomalee.
If these maritime attractions are not enough, there are lots of other places to visit such as the museum of Hartlepool, Camerons Brewery Heritage Centre and the beautiful St Hilda's Church. |
