 | Situated in West Yorkshire in northern England, the quaint town of Halifax has a population of around 90,000, and is well known across the world as a centre for England's woollen manufacturing industry from the 15th Century onwards.
It is believed that the name Halifax is a combination of the Old English words for Holy and Face, because local legend has it that the head of John the Baptist was buried here after his execution. The town's coat of arms still carries an image of the Saint today.
There are a number of fascinating and interesting tourist attractions in this town, such as Halifax Parish Church, parts of which date back to the 12th Century, and Piece Hall, which was once the cloth hall where the trading of the woollen cloth pieces was done and was first opened in January 1779. Today it remains a bustling cente for trade with a number of independent gift and bookshops, and a café.
If you're planning on taking the kids to Halifax then make sure you check out the wonderful Eureka family science museum, which was inpsired and opened by Prince Charles in 1992.
Other attractions worth visiting in Halifax and the surrounding area include Halifax Town Hall, Hebden Bridge Mill, the Manor Heath Park and Jungle Experience, and the Viaduct Theatre.
Halifax has been home to many famous faces over the years, such as Percy Shaw, the inventor of the Cats Eyes used on public roads worldwide, wrestler Big Daddy, TV presenter John Noakes, actor Eric Portman, comedian/actor Wilfred Pickles, and footballer Frank Worthington.
