 | Although it is only Scotland's second largest city, Edinburgh holds the honour of being its capital thanks to its location within Scotland.
It was King David I who first realised the potential of Edinburgh as a capital when he moved his court there in 1124AD from Dumfries, although archaeological evidence shows that people settled on this extinct volcano as early as the Bronze Age. Its proximity to the sea and its elevated position made it ideal for those who feared attack. These days, however, the city is not under threat but the benefits of its location can still be enjoyed with magnificent views from Edinburgh Castle and Arthur's Seat.
Over the centuries Edinburgh has grown and grown, and today the Edinburgh postcode EH encompasses not only Edinburgh but also Livingston, East Linton, Peebles, North Berwick, Bonnyrigg, Penicuik, Linlithgow, West Calder, Longniddry, Balerno, Loanhead, Bathgate, Humbie, Broxburn, Currie, Walkerburn, Dalkeith, Dunbar, Gullane, West Linton, Heriot, Innerleithen, Kirkliston, Kirknewton, Musselburgh, Newbridge, Prestonpans, Gorebridge, Pathhead, Rosewell, South Queensferry, Juniper Green, Tranent, Lasswade, Haddington, and Roslin.
It is well acknowledged that Edinburgh is a haven for tourists with big events such as the Edinburgh Festival, Edinburgh Tattoo and Hogmanay being some of the biggest draws. However, Edinburgh is also considered by many to be a great place to live, with many of the features that draw tourists in being enjoyed by the locals all year round.
For example shopping in Edinburgh New Town at the high street shops and boutique stores; eating out at the many Edinburgh restaurants the city has to offer; drinking in the local watering holes that range from trendy wine bars to historic pubs; going to watch ballet at the Festival Theatre; enjoying a musical at the Edinburgh Playhouse and watching films at one of Edinburgh's cinemas.
