In terms of location, the city of Bristol is close to both the M4 that connects London to South Wales, and the M5, which links Exeter on the south coast of England to Birmingham in the West Midlands. Bristol is well connected to the road network so taking the car is viable option. All the city's parking facilities are run by the local council and there is parking available in the city centre for shoppers, however an easier option may be to use one of the Park & Ride facilities, especially on busy shopping days like weekends.
Alternatively Bristol has two train stations, Bristol Parkway on the outskirts of the city which links you directly to Cardiff, Birmingham and London Paddington, and Bristol Temple Meads about ten minutes walk from the city centre and also links directly to London. There's also Marlborough Street bus station, from here you can take a bus to some of the areas most popular destinations (as well as some lesser known ones), and also take the coach to destinations across the UK.
